Arched-bevel benches and footstools
An elegant design based on traditional wedged-tenon construction, with contrasting woods and carved detailing. The form can be scaled from a footstool to a three-person bench, and adapts nicely to a variety of woods.
The examples shown here are a footstool, 15 inches long and 13 inches high; a small bench 23 inches long and 18 inches high; and a “company” bench about 48 inches long. The pieces at top have a red grandis (eucalyptus) seat and ebonized white oak legs; the footstool at bottom has a walnut seat and plain white oak legs. All have octagonal-profile legs and hand-carved detailing and are built, like Windsor chairs, by driving the legs through the seat and wedging them.
I often have benches or stools of this design for sale in person. If you’re interested in custom sizes or woods, please contact me.
