Side Chairs
Fan-Back “Half-Windsor” Side Chair
This began as a far simpler chair (see the “work chair,” below), but I wanted to see how far I could push the form in the direction of a Windsor. Fanned spindles or “sticks,” stretchers with a swell that mimics traditional turnings, and a carved seat add style while leaving this still a simple, comfortable chair. And nice though it looks, it won’t dominate the dining room: the low profile lets it tuck neatly under the table when not in use.
Work Chair
Starting with a design by Christopher Schwarz for a simple “stick chair,” I arched the crest and added symmetrical but unevenly spaced spindles (or “sticks”). The result is simple but inviting and sits very comfortably, whether you are working at a desk or eating dinner. The example shown here is painted with two layers of milk paint, peacock over marigold, and finished with oil and wax.
