Linen cupboard

Arts-and-Crafts inspired design with mortise-and-tenon construction (62 of them, if I recall correctly). At 50 inches high and 30 wide, the largest piece I’ve built. Cherry with walnut accents and various secondary woods, 2020. The hinges are hand-forged iron from Horton Brasses and the knobs are black iron from Whitechapel Ltd.

Nightstand, Queen Anne style

I gave this nightstand the full 18th-century hand tool treatment: dovetailed drawers, of course, and scrolled feet, but also a shiplapped back, full dust covers between the drawers, and custom-designed mouldings cut with antique wooden hollow and round planes. Since I built it from maple left over from other projects, the wood grain didn’t match well, and so I painted it (Old Fashioned Milk Paint soldier blue) before giving it a topcoat of varnish. By unifying the color, the paint helps to emphasize the overall form.

The drawer pulls are chased brass reproduction hardware from Whitechapel Ltd.

Mini-chest of drawers

A chest of drawers, scaled down to serve as an office credenza. No frills, but all the important elements: dovetailed case and drawers, scrolled feet, and a full frame-and-panel back. (The nightstand above has the same underlying construction, but the casework is hidden by the molding.) Cherry and white pine with oil and varnish, 2012. The drawer pulls are by Kirsten Ross.
