September—Woodland Garden
An eight-panel chip carving, October 2025
This polyptych consists of eight separate carved panels in a salvaged window. Overall size is approximately 36 by 19 inches.
By far my largest work to date, it represents six different species of birds in an early autumn woodland garden. Clockwise from upper left: four goldfinches eating the seeds of black-eyed susans, a cardinal coming in for a landing, two chickadees feasting on American beautyberry, an Eastern towhee, a wood thrush about to fly south for the winter, a second waiting cardinal, and a pair of chipping sparrows rooting in the brush. The flora are all modeled on live examples in my own garden or growing along Raleigh greenways. (People sometimes ask me how long my carvings take. From sketches to shellac this was a very enjoyable but hand-tiring 50 hours, spread out over a month.)
The panels are as always chip-carved in basswood, and the window frame painted with milk paint in three layered colors.
