Six separate carved panels in a salvaged window show a celebration of spring: seven birds (clockwise from upper right: bluebird, cardinal, song sparrow, goldfinch, Carolina wren, robin, and wood thrush) singing the parts of a Bach cantata, “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern,” composed for the Feast of the Annunciation in 1725. (The finch at top is singing the violin solo.) The flowers growing around the music include marigold, iris, columbine, and wild rose.

The panels are as always chip-carved by hand in basswood and finished with shellac, and the window frame is painted with chalk paint. Learn more
