David Walbert Hand-Tool Woodworking

Nightstand, 18th-century style

I gave this nightstand the full 18th-century hand tool treatment: dovetailed drawers, of course, and scrolled feet, but also a shiplapped back, full dust covers between the drawers, and custom-designed mouldings cut with antique wooden hollow and round planes. Since I built it from maple left over from other projects, the wood grain didn’t match well, and so I painted it (Old Fashioned Milk Paint soldier blue) before giving it a topcoat of varnish. By unifying the color, I think, the paint helps to emphasize the overall form.
